The AUS-X Open Melbourne voted in Top 5 Best Sporting Events in 2019 by Australian Event Awards
The inaugural Monster Energy AUS-X Open Melbourne event has been awarded one of Australia’s best sporting events in 2019, placing the AUS-X Open Melbourne within the top five national finalists of the Best Sporting Events held in Australia, in the 2020 Australian Event Awards.
Having spent the previous four years in Sydney, the AUS-X Open reached new heights in 2019, becoming the largest international Supercross and action sports event ever held in the Southern Hemisphere, inside Melbourne’s iconic Marvel Stadium. The AUS-X Open was the largest international Supercross event held outside of the USA and once again attracted some of the world’s best Supercross and Freestyle Motocross athletes, competing in front of 35,000 fans.
The 2019 AUS-X Open Melbourne event was an engineering feat, arguably unmatched by any Supercross event in the world, with over 3,000 plyboards on top of geofabric to protect the prestigious AFL turf, 5,100 Railway Sleepers and 1,856 steel prop supports imported and constructed in the lower level carpark, all to handle and hold the immense pressure of over 850 truckloads and up to 6,000 tonnes of dirt, machinery and infrastructure, positioned in the centre and consuming the whole soccer field of Marvel Stadium.
“Adam Bailey (Co-Founder) and I are beyond proud and grateful for everything the AUS-X Open Melbourne event and our team at AME Management achieved in 2019. We worked with our Chairman – Tony Cochrane, along with Michael Greene and his team for close to two years to overcome all of the challenges and immense risks we all faced in damaging the AFL turf, the stadium base and infrastructure at Marvel Stadium, as well as the largest outdoor brand activation zone of any sporting event held at Marvel Stadium”, expressed Ryan Sanderson (Co-Founder).
“To be recognised as one of the best sporting events in Australia is a huge feat for the AUS-X Open and our amazing team, but it is also a massive boost for the sport of Supercross and the motorcycle industry.
We must acknowledge the incredible riders who risk their lives to compete in what is one of the most dangerous sports in the world, the Supercross teams, Motorcycling Australia and also, our unbelievable fans, with over 14,000 of them travelling from outside of Victoria, from all over Australia and overseas, to attend the first ever AUS-X Open in Melbourne, culminating in the largest and greatest Supercross event ever held in this country.
The average age of our AUS-X Open fan is 36 years old, the youngest when compared to other major Australian sports and we are working as hard as ever to continue to grow the fanbase from all over Australia and internationally, as well as expanding the numbers of young riders entering off-road motorcycle riding, motocross and Supercross, so that this sport continues to expand into the future,” stated Sanderson.
Event industry leaders and experts from around Australia who judge the Awards have read through hundreds of entries and determined that the AUS-X Open deserved to sit amongst the five National Finalists in the Best Sporting Event of the Year (2019).
Entries are judged on all aspects of event management including best practice, innovation, marketing, stakeholder engagement and management, sustainability and event legacy.
Across the board, 2020 was a very high scoring year. In fact, Brenda LaPorte, co-chair of the Judging Panel, reported that “the entries put forward for judging on average scored significantly higher than last year. This is an incredible result knowing what the industry has been through in 2020. It clearly reflects the high quality of the events delivered across Australia and what we have to look forward to when our industry makes its comeback.”
After a turbulent 2020 year due to the coronavirus global pandemic, this year’s AUS-X Open has been postponed until 2021, with organisers anticipated to go bigger and better for the next instalment of the event.
The AUS-X Open finished as the fifth best sporting event of 2019, with the full results below.
